Planting Our Wedding Tree: A Symbol of Love and Growth

If you were part of our special day, you likely remember that Justin and I decided to do something a little out of the ordinary for our unity ceremony. Instead of the traditional candle lighting or sand pouring, we chose to symbolize our love and commitment by planting a tree together. It was a unique and meaningful way for us to express the growth and flourishing of our relationship as we embarked on this new chapter as a family.

The idea of planting a tree as part of a unity ceremony resonated with us. We wanted something that aligned with our lifestyle and personalities, and this concept spoke to our hearts. We were inspired by other couples who had chosen to plant a tree as a symbol of their unity, and we knew that it was the perfect choice for us.

The symbolism behind the tree is incredibly simple yet beautiful. The roots, trunk, leaves, and branches all represent different aspects of our relationship. The roots anchor us, providing stability and support. The trunk represents our unwavering commitment to one another. As for the leaves and branches, they symbolize new growth and the potential for our love to flourish.

As proud North Carolinians, we decided to plant a dogwood tree. The dogwood is the state flower of North Carolina, and it holds a special place in our hearts. However, as we were renting a townhouse at the time of our wedding, we weren’t able to plant our beloved tree directly in the ground.

So, we brought our potted dogwood tree with us to our wedding venue and placed it at the altar. During the ceremony, Justin and I each took handfuls of dirt and carefully placed them around the base of the tree. Together, we watered our not-so-little dogwood, symbolizing our dedication to nurturing our love and allowing it to grow.

It was always our plan to plant the tree in the ground when we found our first home. We had to keep our tree alive in the pot until that day arrived, not knowing exactly when it would be. As winter set in, we started to worry that we had inadvertently caused harm to our beloved tree.

But to our astonishment, when spring arrived in all its glory, tiny green buds appeared on what we had believed to be lifeless branches. It was a sign of hope and a reminder that even in the face of adversity, love and growth prevail.

And now, eight months after our wedding, we have finally closed on our first home. Our wedding tree is no longer confined to a pot; it now stands tall in our very own yard. This symbol of our love and commitment has found its permanent place in our lives, serving as a reminder of our journey together.
