The Village of Versailles Water Treatment Plant

Picture this: nestled at 350 Grand Ave., the Village of Versailles Water Treatment Plant has been catering to the community’s water needs since 2006. Operated by the Water/Wastewater Plant manager and two dedicated operators, this impressive facility boasts an astounding capacity of 1.5 million gallons per day (MGD). It’s a true labor of love, with the plant running 365 days a year.

To quench the thirst of the Village, Versailles relies on groundwater extracted from ten production wells. These wells pump raw water to the treatment plant, with half located near the former Water Treatment Plant, and the other half closer to the new one.

The journey of the water begins as it is pumped from the well field to the aerator at the treatment plant. Here, outside air is introduced to the water, oxidizing iron and reducing carbon dioxide. The aerator also plays a crucial role in disinfection, as chlorine is added to strip the raw water of any ammonia lurking within.

Next, the water gracefully moves to the solids contact clarifier. Lime and soda ash are skillfully added to soften and coagulate the water, providing pristine clarity. The solids that settle are carefully collected at the bottom of the clarifier and directed to the lime sludge storage tank, located strategically east of the water treatment plant.

But the journey doesn’t end there! The clarified water continues its metamorphosis in the recarbonation tanks, where carbon dioxide makes a grand entrance. This process adjusts the alkalinity (pH) of the finished water, ensuring it stays in the desired alkaline range of 8.3-8.8 on the pH scale.

En route to its final destination, the water encounters gravity sand filters, which act as the ultimate purification guardians. These filters diligently remove any remaining suspended chemicals and bacteria, leaving the water sparkling clean and safe.

As the water leaves the filters, it finds solace in the supplemental backwash tank, designed to ensure the filters are kept in pristine condition. The tank is equipped with pumps for backflushing, ensuring the filters remain clean and efficient. Once the filters are sparkling clean, the water gracefully flows into the clearwell.

Just like a secret treasure chest, the clearwell has the capacity to store a staggering 225,000 gallons of finished water. When the Village is thirsty, the water is pumped from the clearwell into the high service pump wells, where it eagerly awaits its journey to the distribution system. To maintain stable pressure, the Village also relies on two 500,000-gallon water towers: the WJ Bohman Tower on the east side and the Terry St. Tower on the north side.

Village of Versailles Wastewater Treatment Plant

Brace yourself for an adventure into the impressive Village of Versailles Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 300 Grand Ave. This plant has a rich history, with its construction dating back to 1939. Over the years, it has undergone numerous modifications and expansions to meet regulatory requirements and support local growth.

The Village’s sanitary sewer collection system, consisting of gravity flow mains and five lift stations, feeds into the Grand Ave. Lift Station. From there, all wastewater embarks on a journey under Swamp Creek to reach the treatment plant. With a current rating of 750,000 gallons per day (0.750 MGD), this facility is well-prepared to handle the Village’s wastewater needs.

The wastewater treatment process unfolds in stages, starting with fine screening to remove non-treatable materials like wood, paper, plastics, metals, and other foreign items. These materials find their resting place in a landfill, bidding farewell to the treatment process.

Next, the wastewater flows to the oxidation ditch, a vital component where biological treatment takes place. This magical chamber utilizes microscopic bacteria to efficiently remove organic, nitrogen, and phosphorous-containing waste, leaving the water cleaner and safer.

The transformed wastewater then gracefully moves into two clarifiers, large circular tanks where solid materials settle at the bottom. The result: a crystal-clear liquid known as clarified effluent. But the journey to purity is not yet complete! The clarified effluent proceeds to an open channel, where it undergoes disinfection. Ultraviolet (UV) light makes an appearance, eliminating harmful bacteria before the water is released into Swamp Creek.

Meanwhile, the captured solids from the treatment process embark on their own journey. Pumped to a digester tank, they undergo additional aeration, transforming into a stabilized product known as biosolids. These valuable biosolids find purpose as they are either land-applied as fertilizer or stored for future use. The Village even constructed a state-of-the-art sludge dewatering system to optimize the storage and application process.
