Welcome to Tips Tree Planting, your go-to resource for everything related to tree planting and gardening. In this article, we will explore the impact of tree planting on biodiversity and ecosystem services. While tree planting is often seen as a positive activity, it’s crucial to understand the potential negative consequences it can have on certain ecosystems. Let’s explore the importance of considering tree planting techniques when it comes to grassy biomes.

Protecting Grassy Biomes: A Hidden Conservation Priority

The Undervaluation of Grassy Biomes

Grassy biomes, including ancient grasslands, savannas, and open-canopy woodlands, are facing immense pressure due to human-induced environmental changes. Unfortunately, these diverse ecosystems are often perceived to be of low conservation priority compared to forests. This perception is reflected in national and international environmental policies that unintentionally contribute to their conversion for agriculture and degradation caused by inappropriate management practices. Furthermore, tree planting initiatives in grassy biomes, both afforestation (planting forests where they did not historically occur) and reforestation (planting trees on deforested land), can have significant environmental costs.

The Environmental Costs of Tree Planting

Planting trees in grassy biomes, particularly those with seasonally dry tropical and subtropical climates, can have detrimental effects on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Dense tree cover limits the richness and productivity of light-demanding herbaceous plants, affecting the overall biodiversity of the ecosystem. Additionally, it reduces habitat availability for animals adapted to open environments. Trees also require more water and soil nutrients compared to grasses and forbs, altering nutrient cycles, reducing soil-carbon storage, and changing hydrology. Despite these costs, tree planting and carbon sequestration initiatives continue to target grassy biomes.

The Misperception of Grassy Biomes

Many of the world’s grassy biomes can, in theory, support closed-canopy forests based on climate conditions. However, recent scientific advances have shown that the extent and distribution of these biomes are shaped by interactions with fire, herbivores, and edaphic factors that limit tree growth. These ecological forces have created modern grassy biomes that are ecologically distinct from forests but are still often misperceived as degraded ecosystems resulting from human-caused deforestation.

Inaccurate Mapping: The Atlas of Forest Landscape Restoration Opportunities

To illustrate the consequences of misperceptions, we analyze the Atlas of Forest Landscape Restoration Opportunities, an interactive online map that identifies areas for forest restoration. Unfortunately, this map misclassifies millions of square kilometers of grassy biomes as “deforested” or “degraded,” inaccurately portraying these ecosystems as opportunities for forest restoration. The map’s classification fails to account for the ecological distinctiveness and conservation value of grassy biomes, leading to misguided policy decisions.

Recommendations for Science and Policy

Integrating Conservation Efforts

Efforts to conserve and restore forests and grassy biomes should be integrated to properly address their distinct conservation and management challenges. Accurate, high-resolution vegetation maps that depict grassy biomes at the relevant scales are needed. These maps should highlight vegetation heterogeneity and alternative biome states to support landscape-level management and restoration. Furthermore, formal recognition of nonforest ecosystems is crucial to avoid afforestation and forest expansion in ancient grassy biomes.
