Planting Over Seven Million Trees: A Step Towards a Greener Future

November 23, 2022 Ottawa, Ontario Natural Resources Canada

In our ongoing battle against climate change, Canada is committed to restoring and expanding the country’s forests. Trees play a crucial role in our lives by capturing carbon, improving air quality, and supporting wildlife. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Forests Ontario and our contribution to the 2 Billion Trees program. Together, we aim to plant 7.2 million trees over the next three years, making a significant impact on our environment.

A Nature-Based Climate Solution

As part of the 2 Billion Trees program, this project by Forests Ontario will not only increase forest cover but also improve forest conditions. These trees will serve as nature-based climate solutions by sequestering significant amounts of carbon. Additionally, they will contribute to habitat restoration, benefiting species and habitats at risk. Moreover, these trees will provide numerous social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits that are synonymous with trees and forests.

Forests Ontario will take on the responsibility of sourcing and collecting native tree seeds. They will work diligently with nursery partners to grow millions of native trees. The organization will collaborate with planting partners and landowners to ensure that these seed-sourced trees are planted in the right locations. Moreover, they will monitor and assess the survival of these trees in the years to come. Forests Ontario has built strong relationships with its network of partners, enabling them to prepare for future planting projects, as well as outreach, engagement, training, and capacity building for 2023 and beyond.

Celebrating Ontario’s Forests

Ontario is renowned for its diverse forests, ranging from the majestic black spruce in the Boreal forest to the vibrant sugar maples adorning southern Ontario. Our afforestation and restoration efforts are centered on preserving the unique beauty and biodiversity of these regions. By contributing to the 2 Billion Trees program, we are taking significant strides towards achieving our goal of planting two billion trees and creating a greener and more sustainable future for all Canadians.

Creating Jobs and Protecting Biodiversity

Through this initiative, we are not only committed to tackling climate change but also generating clean and meaningful employment opportunities across the country. Furthermore, our efforts to protect biodiversity in Canada are greatly enhanced through collaboration with dedicated organizations like Forests Ontario. Their commitment to revitalizing and caring for our environment is crucial in our collective pursuit of a better world.

Leading the Way on the Global Stage

The Government of Canada continues to prioritize the protection of nature and biodiversity. As we prepare to host the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal, we have the opportunity to showcase our leadership in conserving and restoring nature. This conference brings together representatives from 196 countries, and we are eager to demonstrate the actions we are taking to halt biodiversity loss worldwide.
