Community Creates Green Space

The importance of community engagement in Key West’s green initiatives cannot be overstated. A dedicated group of individuals residing near Garrison Bight, led by visionary Colleen Hough, approached the City with a simple goal: to beautify a corner patch of scraggly grass. With the assistance of City Commissioner Sam Kaufman and the Urban Forester Karen DeMaria, this area has transformed into a vibrant liveaboard community park.

Thanks to the City’s Community Services crews, two gumbo limbos were planted, generously donated by a resident who had removed some trees. According to the City’s tree ordinance, whenever a tree is removed, it must be replaced. In cases where there is no available space on private property, the removed trees can be donated, allowing the City to plant them in public spaces. This wonderful collaboration has resulted in a more inviting and shady spot for residents and their furry friends to enjoy.
