Projects across Australia and around the world are turning to tree planting as a solution to combat climate change. Whether it’s thousands, millions, or even trillions of trees, the idea is to create “carbon sinks” that absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But is this massive tree planting effort enough to put the brakes on climate change? Let’s explore the environmental impact of these initiatives.

Tree planting has become a significant focus of carbon sequestration efforts, both through carbon credit schemes and various charities. Carbon Positive Australia, for example, raises funds to plant native trees and vegetation on degraded land across the country. According to the organization, safeguarding and restoring the landscape through tree planting could potentially reduce over 50 gigatonnes (50,000,000,000 tonnes) of carbon emissions that would otherwise enter the atmosphere. They firmly believe that maintaining Australian landscapes through the planting of native trees can make a significant difference in reducing climate change.

Carbon Sinks and Their Limitations

Forests act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis as trees grow. However, the amount of carbon trees can absorb is finite, and they release carbon dioxide as they decay or burn, as we’ve seen increasingly in Australia. Despite their limitations, tree planting and reforestation efforts continue to gain momentum.

Australia’s Tree Planting Programs

In 2014, the Australian Government launched the ambitious 20 Million Trees Program, with the goal of planting 20 million trees by 2020. The program aimed to achieve environmental conservation, community engagement, and carbon reduction. Ultimately, it surpassed its target, resulting in the planting of more than 29.5 million trees and 4.06 million understorey plants in 235 projects. While the amount of carbon sequestration varies depending on factors such as tree species and age, the program estimated an average sequestration range of 0.005 to 0.01 tonne of CO2 per tree per year during the first 30 years of its life.

Carbon Sequestration Potential

To put these numbers into perspective, Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions were approximately 463.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022 alone. While tree planting initiatives make a valuable contribution, they alone cannot offset the nation’s emissions. The Australia Institute has raised concerns about the integrity of carbon credits, and the Climate Council believes that such schemes “do little” to address the climate crisis. Nonetheless, the popularity of tree planting programs continues to grow.

A Trillion Trees Vision

Organizations like Trillion Trees Australia (formerly known as Men of the Trees) and the World Wildlife Fund Australia have set ambitious goals to plant massive numbers of trees. Trillion Trees Australia suggests that if each of the world’s 7.5 billion people planted 140 trees, it would amount to one trillion trees. The World Wildlife Fund Australia aims to plant 2 billion trees by 2030 as a natural climate solution to global heating. These visionary initiatives highlight the scale of ambition required to tackle climate change.

The CSIRO’s report, “Australia’s Carbon Sequestration Potential,” acknowledges that there is no silver bullet to storing enough carbon to mitigate climate change. Instead, a portfolio approach combining the best set of technologies and strategies will be required. Tree planting plays a crucial role, but it should be part of a broader range of emission reduction efforts and sustainable practices.
