Did you know that tiger nuts (Cyperus esculentus L.) are a delicious and nutritious tuber crop? Packed with dietary fiber, protein, iron, calcium, and oil, these tubers offer a sweet flavor that is waiting to be explored. Unfortunately, the true potential of tiger nuts remains untapped due to a lack of information about their nutritional benefits. That’s why we’re here to enlighten you! At Tips Tree Planting, we believe in unlocking the hidden treasures of nature, starting with the mighty tiger nut.

In Nigeria, tiger nuts are predominantly grown in the middle belt and northern regions, where the soil types are mainly Alfisols, Inceptisols, and Ultisols. These soils are characterized by their low organic matter content, high sand content, and low activity clays, making them prone to degradation and poor fertility. As a result, farmers often struggle to achieve satisfactory crop yields. However, fear not! Through years of research and experience, we’ve discovered a game-changing solution: organic amendments.

Harnessing the Power of Organic Amendments

Organic amendments, such as biochar and green manure, have emerged as effective strategies to enhance soil fertility, preserve soil structure, and improve crop yields sustainably. Biochar, a product of organic material conversion through thermochemical processes, is a stable substance that can persist in the soil for many years. Its rich nutrient content and numerous benefits make it a key player in soil health improvement. When added to the soil, biochar increases soil organic matter, improves soil structure, reduces nutrient leaching, enhances nutrient availability for crops, and promotes the growth and diversity of beneficial soil microbes. In short, it’s a superhero for your soil!

Biochar can be derived from various biomass sources, including woody plant materials and agricultural wastes like manures. The quality of biochar depends on its characteristics, such as adsorption and cation exchange capacities, pH levels, mobile matter content, and aromatic carbon content. Plant-derived biochars, for instance, boast high aromatic carbon content, thanks to the abundant lignin and cellulose present in the biomass. On the other hand, animal manures yield biochars with high ash content, which positively influences their nutrient and chemical composition. While research in Nigeria has primarily focused on plant-derived biochar, we believe it’s time to explore the potential of cow dung biochar.

The Green Manure Connection

Another powerful ally in the battle for soil fertility is green manure. This technique involves planting specific crops for the purpose of enriching the soil through organic matter deposition, nutrient increase, erosion prevention, and improvement of nutrient availability near the soil surface. The incorporation of green manure can significantly enhance soil fertility by enhancing soil organic matter, increasing nutrient levels, reducing nutrient leaching (especially nitrogen), and minimizing erosion. Green manure acts as a fast-decomposing nutrient source, complementing the slow rate of degradation of biochar.

In our quest to unlock the full potential of tiger nut cultivation, we’ve chosen Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia Asteraceae) as our green manure source. This versatile plant, which thrives in the humid and sub-humid tropics of Asia and Africa, boasts impressive nutrient concentrations (N, P, and K) in its biomass. Its ability to extract nutrients from the soil and rapid decomposition make it an ideal partner for tiger nut cultivation.

Unveiling the Wonders of Our Research

With our sights set on the savanna Alfisols, we conducted extensive research to evaluate the effects of different organic amendments on soil properties, growth, yield, and tuber quality of tiger nuts. Our study explored the single and combined application of wood and cow dung biochar with green manure to determine the most effective approach for optimizing tiger nut performance. Through careful experimentation and analysis, we aimed to uncover the secrets to nurturing healthy soil and achieving bountiful harvests.
