In Nigeria, tiger nuts are predominantly grown in the middle belt and northern regions, where the soil types are mainly Alfisols, Inceptisols, and Ultisols. These soils are characterized by their low organic matter content, high sand content, and low activity clays, making them prone to degradation and poor fertility. As a result, farmers often struggle to achieve satisfactory crop yields. However, fear not! Through years of research and experience, we’ve discovered a game-changing solution: organic amendments.

Harnessing the Power of Organic Amendments

Organic amendments, such as biochar and green manure, have emerged as effective strategies to enhance soil fertility, preserve soil structure, and improve crop yields sustainably. Biochar, a product of organic material conversion through thermochemical processes, is a stable substance that can persist in the soil for many years. Its rich nutrient content and numerous benefits make it a key player in soil health improvement. When added to the soil, biochar increases soil organic matter, improves soil structure, reduces nutrient leaching, enhances nutrient availability for crops, and promotes the growth and diversity of beneficial soil microbes. While research in Nigeria has primarily focused on plant-derived biochar, we believe it’s time to explore the potential of cow dung biochar.

This technique involves planting specific crops for the purpose of enriching the soil through organic matter deposition, nutrient increase, erosion prevention, and improvement of nutrient availability near the soil surface.
