Eucalyptus stellulata ‘Kiandra’ – Black Sally: Explore the Beauty of Our Amazing Swamp Gums!

Welcome to Tips Tree Planting! Today, we want to introduce you to a truly exceptional tree – the Eucalyptus stellulata ‘Kiandra’, also known as Black Sally. With its weeping habit, stunning bark, and abundant flowers, this evergreen tree is a must-have for any garden enthusiast.

A Closer Look at ‘Kiandra’

Shoots ‘n Leaves:

In its early stages, the young shoots of ‘Kiandra’ display a vibrant crimson color. Its juvenile foliage is heart-shaped, while new emerging leaves in the spring take on a pale lime-green hue with hints of gold and shades of sage green infused with pink. As the tree matures, its adult foliage grows to be 5-9 cm long and 1.5-2.5 cm wide, elliptical/broadly lanceolate in shape, with 3 parallel veins. Interestingly, this feature reveals that Eucalyptus stellulata is a monocalypt, closely related to the Snow Gum group, despite its preference for wet ground unlike most Snow gums that thrive in free-draining soils.

Prepare to be amazed by the beauty of the Black Sally’s bark. It boasts an exquisite combination of pearl grey overlaid with lime, moss, and olive greens, with hints of coffee and white patches – reminiscent of the iconic London Plane tree. The bark is smooth to the touch, inviting you to explore its tactile qualities.

When it comes to flowers, ‘Kiandra’ doesn’t disappoint. It produces profuse clusters of up to 15 buds, each opening into delicate star-like white flowers. The sight is truly enchanting. After the blossoms fade, tiny fruit pods follow suit.

Leaf Aroma:

The Eucalyptol scent of the leaves is strong, accompanied by a fantastic sweet pineapple, fruity, and balsam aroma, adding a delightful fragrance to your garden.

Rate of Growth:

Initially, ‘Kiandra’ may have a slow start in terms of growth, as it focuses on establishing its roots. However, once it becomes established, it experiences fast growth at a rate of 1.5-2.0 meters per year.

Height in Maturity:

If left unpruned, ‘Kiandra’ will reach a short-term height of about 4 to 5 meters. However, over the long term, which spans around 15-20 years, it has the potential to reach a height of 15 meters or more if not managed. With regular branch tip pruning and pollarding, it can be kept at a smaller size, making it a versatile tree for various gardening preferences. Hardiness and Resilience:

The Black Sally boasts good hardiness, with its root system thriving in temperatures as low as -12°C to -14°C once it reaches maturity. In fact, during the Beast from the East in 2017/2018, our ‘Kiandra’ trees endured the full force of ice-laden easterly winds. While they were defoliated by March, they quickly bounced back, leafing out again just four weeks later in the spring, showcasing their remarkable resilience.

Factors Influencing Hardiness:

Several factors contribute to the hardiness of Eucalyptus stellulata. Firstly, the provenance of the seed plays a significant role. At Tips Tree Planting, all our seeds come from frosty or cold locations, ensuring robust cold tolerance. Additionally, how the tree is grown matters – high nitrogen levels can reduce cold tolerance, while access to potassium enhances hardiness. The age of the tree also plays a part, with older trees generally being hardier. Finally, the length of time the tree has been planted in the ground affects its ability to withstand cold winters. By encouraging deep rooting through a well-prepared planting pit, you can expedite the establishment of your tree, increasing its chances of surviving harsh winter conditions.
